Why Explore Space?

I greatly enjoy the website, Letters of Note, for the obvious reason that I enjoy reading well crafted letters by smarter people by myself. So earlier this week, NASA landed on fucking Mars! Not only that, they managed to film the landing and are supplying us with a steady stream of high resolution imagery. The sheer math behind this is so vastly impressive that my applaud for this feat doesn’t seem enough. Of course, nutbag central America provides us with more than enough idiots that are now crying that this is a waste of money. Seeing that my first impression of this outcry being a joke was wrong, and that these people are quite serious I wanted to lead you to an incredible response from 1970.

“In 1970, a Zambia-based nun named Sister Mary Jucunda wrote to Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger, then-associate director of science at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, in response to his ongoing research into a piloted mission toMars. Specifically, she asked how he could suggest spending billions of dollars on such a project at a time when so many children were starving on Earth.”
