Back in Black – A Tribute to 30 Years of Rock n’Roll
Tony Larson, SuperBrand Creative Director, Skater
When I was in 8th grade, I began to stray from what was offered to me on the Southern California airwaves (mostly pop and soft rock) and officially began my own exploration into music. I was drawn to punk and metal for the most part. That year, AC/DC’s “Back in Black” is ALL I wanted for Christmas. I don’t remember where I heard it first, but I know it’s all I could think of after that first listen. It was at the top of my Christmas list.
So, on Christmas morning I got up with my brothers way before dawn and made the annual tip-toe’d sneak down the hall and into the living room. On all fours, we crawled around the base of our Christmas tree, looking for our names scrawled across the various square and rectangular boxes. Noticing the unmistakable shape of a 12′ vinyl record sleeve leaning up against another box, I confirmed the recipient name:
To: Lil Tony.
Love: Mom and Dad
It’s mine! I ripped the wrapping paper to shreds, alerting my brothers to my new treasure. As I pulled the paper away from the sleeve, I saw it. AC/DC. In bright pink lettering. My gaze drifted down to an old lady with bars across her eyes! What the fuck?
Continuing down the cover, I read the words : Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. This was all wrong.
Disappointed, I continued to scour the room for additional presents, but that was the only album I got that year. It later turned out that my mom couldn’t find that album anywhere in San Diego County, so she hedged her bets and hoped I’d enjoy the substitution. Which in fact, I did. That album introduced me to Bon Scott and I still have all of the lyrics memorized.
I’ve since owned “Back In Black” on tape, CD and MP3 about 10 different times.
But I only have one copy now.
On vinyl.
Fuck yeah
