On the other hand, all this mayhem also attracted artists from around the world. Rock n’Roll was born in the clubs of St.Pauli, it was home to the Beatles before they took the world by storm. John Lennon once said, “I was born in Liverpool but I grew up in Hamburg”. Any musician of talent played in St. Pauli’s clubs, the saying went, that if you came to London or New York in the 50s and 60s with a sticker on your guitar case from the famous “Star Club” you were immediately given a record contract. Jimmy Hendrix played his famous gig here and it was the spiritual home of the beat generation before London or New York woke up to the beat.
