FC St. Pauli

“Landungsbrücken”, St. Pauli. The old port entry for sailors heading into St.Pauli’s red light district
St. Pauli is a small inner-city district in Hamburg, that borders on the port and is most famous for it’s notorious red light district, centred around the “Reeperbahn”, and is known for the anarchistic take-over of large parts of the Hafenstrasse in the 80s. Ever since the late 80s it is also home to a large creative community that have in turn added their own flavour to this neighbourhood.
It is difficult to paint a proper picture of this neighbourhood without going back in time. Hamburg’s port, the 4th largest commercial port in the world, has always played a large role in St.Pauli’s history and social context. Up until the start of the container ship system, sailors used to be able to spend up to 4 days in the city when their ships were being unloaded and re-loaded.
There are only a few things sailors want to do on-shore and that usually includes spending their pay on prostitutes, booze and shady tattoos.
The neighbourhood lived on this huge influx of sailors, it essentially gave birth to the world famous “Reeperbahn”, St.Pauli’s main street in the red light district. Without going into to too much detail, it is save to assume, that St.Pauli has always been the dark, seedy, sometimes dangerous and mostly fascinating part of town where sailors from around the world and all those who wanted to be a part of this vibe, let loose and partied.
