Berlin says Thank You, Mr. Bailey
Berlin, January 2009 in the neighbourhood of Mitte. For those of you who don‘t know what that means – here‘s a brief explanation.
Mitte is the district of Berlin that literally lies in the center of the city. If you know the skyline, that‘s where the TV-tower is located. Mitte is very popular among visitors, especially the design conscious. Mr. Mort (a blogger on the hunt for the originally dressed) would browse the streets of Mitte to snap his pictures. Spanish, Italian, French. A lot of people from countries where winters are not as cold as in Berlin.
Burberry Prorsum Fall Winter 2010
The winters get very cold in the German capitol. They basically start in October and end in April. That‘s seven months of rain, cold and greyness. The temperatures reach their lowest in January and February – wind, straight from Siberia. Heavy Outerwear is required if you don‘t want to go down with pneumonia: down jacket, wool sweater, longjohns, boots with rubber soles to prevent from the rain… But that makes you look – and feel – like the Marshmallow Man – not a chance to get shot by Mr. Mort.
With an outfit that protects you from Berlin weather, it‘s hard to compete with the looks of the tourists. You know the way they dress, for instance in Paris… A short, little tailored pea coat number or a – unlined – leather jacket over a Rick Owens jersey, tight denim, loafers with leather soles… The coat – of course – is not buttoned… looks cooler. Scarf only because it‘s fashionable these days, not to keep you warm. Cap? Quiff forbid.
Thank God, next winter Berliners and the style-conscious of all other freezing cities have something to put on their backs that keeps them warm AND makes them look sexy. One thoughtful designer is Christopher Bailey for Burberry Prorsum. Maybe it‘s the importance of the Russian market that made him design some fabulous outdoor pieces for fall/winter 2010/11 or maybe he‘s tired of freezing off his own ass. Whatever the reason: Thank you, Mr. Bailey.
